Tokyo topped the list of most searched destinations for summer travel by people in Taiwan, Google Taiwan said in a statement yesterday, with Japan dominating the top 10.

Osaka was second on the list of places most searched for using Google for flights from June 1 to Aug. 31, while Sapporo, Okinawa and Fukuoka were sixth to eighth, said Tina Lin （林雅芳）, managing director of sales and operations at the Taiwan branch of the search engine giant.

Penghu County’s Magong City （馬公）, Seoul and Bangkok were third to fifth, while Los Angeles and London were ninth and 10th in the category, Lin said.

Google has updated a function called Destination Insights, through which people can look at the most searched for countries and cities since 2020 and see how the numbers have changed, she said.

Destination Insights data showed that Taiwan was in the top 10 for destinations for six Asia-Pacific regions and countries this year, including fourth in Malaysia, sixth in Singapore and seventh in Hong Kong, she added.

Taiwan was the ninth-most searched destination for summer flights in Japan, and 10th in Thailand and the Philippines, the data showed, she said.

The tourism industry is expected to benefit from the function because it can be used to find out what places people are searching for, allowing operators to design offers that better appeal to them, Lin said.
