Taiwanese ultramarathon runner Tsai Wen-ya won a 10-day endurance race in New York with the best distance ever recorded by a Taiwanese athlete.

Tsai finished first among the six female runners in the 10-day race organized by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, New York, with a total of 671.6 miles (1,080.8km) run.

That broke the record for a Taiwanese participant of 664.8 miles set by Lo Wei-ming in 2019 and also earned the 53-year-old a slot in the 52-day Self-Transcendence 3,100 Mile ultramarathon to be held from Sept. 4 to Oct. 25.

Tsai, who ran the greatest distance on nine of the 10 days according to the marathon team’s Web site, told the Central News Agency that she slept only four hours each day during the event and was quite sleepy after finishing the race.

Aside from Tsai, three male Taiwanese runners participated in the 10-day race — 50-year-old Wei Chia-hung, 66-year-old Chung Yun-hua and 27-year-old Wang Wan-jen.

Wei finished third among the 15 male runners with 632.7 miles, Chung was fifth with 545.2 miles and Wang, who developed a blister on his foot soon after the event began, ended 10th with 483.1 miles.

The 10-day race was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic and was held this year for the first time since 2019.
