《TAIPEI TIMES》Taiwan to host women’s empowerment event in NY

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to hold a series of events in New York in parallel with the Commission on the Status of Women （CSW） session, which is to take place from Monday to March 17.

The CSW, a global intergovernmental body under the UN, is dedicated to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The annual two-week session of the CSW this year is the first physical event following a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Department of NGO International Affairs Director-General Constance Wang （王雪虹） told a news briefing in Taipei yesterday.

The ministry has been working with the Foundation of Women’s Rights Promotion and Development to hold the annual Taiwan Gender Equality Week （TGEW） since 2020, she said.

This year’s events are to be held in New York to coincide with the CSW session, she said.

To complement the themes of this year’s CSW session — innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls — the TGEW is to focus on Taiwan’s efforts and achievements in technology and gender equality, she said.

A nighttime party focusing on women in technology is to be held on Tuesday next week at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, she said.

Up-and-coming Taiwanese designer Claudia Wang （王子欣）, who made her debut at the London Fashion Week last year, is to present her work that combines technology, fashion, environmental awareness, sustainability and the digital economy, she said.

After the party, a forum on promoting gender equality in the digital age is to take place at the office on Thursday next week, she said.

Chern Yi-juang （陳儀莊）, the first female National Science and Technology Council deputy minister, is to share Taiwan’s efforts in promoting gendered innovations in technology with global partners at the forum, she said.

Both events are to be broadcast live on the ministry’s YouTube channel and Facebook page, she said.

Thirty-one Taiwanese civic groups, including the Garden of Hope Foundation and the Taiwan Nurses’ Association, have signed up for the NGO CSW forum, she said.

The groups are to explore Taiwan’s deployment of technology in areas such as healthcare and violence prevention, and share with the world Taiwan’s experiences and achievements in gender equality and women empowerment through physical and virtual meetings, she said.
