DPP falls short on election night:
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lost ground across Taiwan, with its biggest hopes dashed in Taipei, where the party hoped to reclaim the mayor’s seat for the first time since 1998, losing to the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT). Hsinchu ousting a DPP mayor in favor of the upstart Taiwan People’s Party and Taichung voters re-electing a KMT mayor helped sour what President Tsai Ing-wen said would be a referendum on her leadership.
