American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Director Kin Moy has received warm responses from netizens, including several local government heads, after posting a comment on the AIT’s Facebook page asking for Taiwan travel advice.

The AIT, which represents US interests in Taiwan, posted a message on its Facebook page saying that the director and his family could not decide how to spend their winter vacation.

“Watch their video to hear what they are considering. Could you help them by leaving a comment on our Facebook page by Dec. 20, 2015, with your recommendation?” the post said. “The 10 recommendations that receive the most ‘likes’ will receive a souvenir from AIT.”

Hsinchu Mayor Lin Chih-chien (林智堅) shared Moy’s video on his Facebook page on Sunday and invited the director and his family to visit the northern Taiwan city.

Lin recommended a tour that included the Hsinchu Railway Station — which he called the oldest railway station in Taiwan — and historic monuments in the city’s old town area.

He said that there are 26 historic sites and architectural landmarks within 1km2 of the old town area; the highest concentration of its kind in Taiwan.

The post has so far attracted more than 400 comments, including from Tainan Mayor William Lai (賴清德), Yilan County Commissioner Lin Tsung-hsien (林聰賢), Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu (陳菊), Lienchiang County Commissioner Liu Tseng-ying (劉增應) and Chiayi County Commissioner Helen Chang (張花冠).

AIT yesterday evening posted an update on its Facebook page, saying: “Thanks so much to our Facebook friends for all the wonderful suggestions for what to see and do in Taiwan.”
