《TAIPEI TIMES 焦點》 Rabbit set to overtake duck in Taoyuan

The Taoyuan Landscape Art Festival is to open in Dayuan Township (大園) today, featuring Moon Rabbit by Florentijn Hofman, the Dutch artist whose Rubber Duck created a sensation last year.

Taoyuan County’s Cultural Affairs Bureau opened the venue to the media on Tuesday. Even though some details of the giant sculpture had not been completed, reporters said they were impressed.

Consistent with Hofman’s style of maximizing the familiar little things in life, the reclining Moon Rabbit is 25m tall and is made of waterproof paper, wood and styrofoam, guaranteeing that it will not experience the same fate as the inflatable Rubber Duck, which exploded while on display in the county’s Sinwu Township (新屋) last year.

Also on display at the Taoyuan Naval Base in Dayuan are artistic works that include Da Qi Divine Travel (大氣神遊) and Vacuum Energy (虛空中能量) by Taiwanese artist Li Jen (李真), Happy Animal Party (快樂動物派對) by Taiwanese artist Hung Yi (洪易), Reincarnation (六道輪迴) by Chinese artist Zhang Huan (張洹) and Stone Trail (石徑) by Chinese artist Xu Bing (徐冰).

The festival is to end on Sept. 14.

Hofmann’s Moon Rabbit is expected to attract huge crowds of visitors, just as Rubber Duck did last year.
