A severe drought in North Korea is putting the lives of children at risk and many are in serious danger of disease and malnutrition, the U.N. children’s agency said on Wednesday.
聯合國兒童機構週三表示，北韓大旱正讓孩童命懸一線，且許多孩童面臨疾病與營養不良的危險。
UNICEF said in a statement that there had been in a sharp increase in cases of diarrhoea among children in drought-affected areas, as access to safe drinking water and sanitation was severely compromised.
聯合國兒童基金會透過聲明指出，在受乾旱波及的地區，安全飲用水與衛生條件嚴重不足下，孩童的腹瀉案例急劇增加。
The North says it is experiencing its worst drought in a century, with some of its main farming regions particularly hard hit.
北韓說其正經歷百年來最嚴重的乾旱，部份主要農業地區受創特別嚴重。
The country’s large number of malnourished children - as many as one in four children according to a 2012 study - heightens concerns about the impact of drought, UNICEF said.
聯合國兒童基金會說，北韓有著大量營養不良的孩童─根據一份2012年的研究，多至每4個孩童就有1名營養不良─加深了對乾旱衝擊的憂慮。
Experts said that despite the severity of the drought, the North’s fledgling markets and private farm plots should provide a buffer against a famine of the sort that devastated the country in the 1990s.
專家說，儘管乾旱嚴重，北韓的新興市場與私人小片農地應該可以提供緩衝來對抗這種曾在1990年代重創北韓的飢荒。
