SAFETY RULES: Vehicles cannot exceed 20kph in pedestrian priority zones and drivers contravening regulations could be fined NT$1,200 to NT$36,000

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications has amended traffic signs, markings and signals in line with the Pedestrian Traffic Safety Facilities Act （行人交通安全設施條例） that is to take effect tomorrow.
Changes include marking the beginning and end of pedestrian priority zones with blue signs with white text and symbols.
The act was passed in April by the Legislative Yuan.
The Ministry of the Interior has announced enforcement rules, which mandate that within pedestrian priority zones, intersections must have designated signs and markings, and vehicles cannot exceed 20kph while honking is banned.
Speeding in pedestrian priority zones can be penalized under the amended Regulations on Establishing Traffic Signs and Indicating Lines （道路交通標誌標線號誌設置規則）, which would result in fines ranging from NT$1,200 to NT$2,400 for under 40kph, and NT$6,000 to NT$36,000 for more than 40kph, the ministry said.
The ministry revised regulations on road traffic signs, markings and signals to incorporate the pedestrian priority zones, ministry road development department head Chu Ta-ching （朱大慶） said.
The regulations regarding road traffic signs, markings and signals have also been amended. Vehicles were only prohibited from parking within gridlines, but those areas would be required to be kept clear entirely, with no stopping allowed.
