Representatives from the Alliance for Taiwan to Join the United Nations are to depart for the US on Friday to promote Taiwanese membership in the world body.
Alliance secretary-general William Lo (羅榮光) told a news conference in Taipei that Taiwan’s continued exclusion from the UN is regrettable, as it is an organization dedicated to world peace and prosperity.
“Taiwan is an independent sovereign country and should be a member of the UN,” Lo said.
Former minister of national defense Michael Tsai (蔡明憲) said that former vice president Lien Chan’s (連戰) decision to attend China’s massive military parade to mark the 70th anniversary of Japan’s defeat in World War II made the mission of the alliance this year a somber undertaking.
“Lien’s attendance at the military parade is tantamount to trampling on the dignity of Taiwanese people,” Tsai said.
Taiwan Solidarity Union Legislator Chou Ni-an (周倪安) said that President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) so-called “diplomatic truce” with China” had led to a dimming of Taiwan’s voice in the global community.
Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Huang Wei-cher (黃偉哲) said that the number of missiles China has targeting Taiwan is at a record high this year, according to a report released by the defense ministry on Monday.
“Cross-strait peace is a mirage,” he said, adding that Lien’s China trip only serves to emphasize the importance of Taiwan gaining UN membership.
