The Health Promotion Administration (HPA) is working with bakeries to provide healthier moon cakes ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The administration on Friday publicized the results of its moon cakes calories poll.

The moon cake with the most calories was the traditional Cantonese-style double-egg-yolk moon cake, which weighs 185g and contains 790 calories, while the one with the lowest is the traditional clay-oven-baked pineapple tart, weighing 30g and containing only 93 calories.

Each traditional Cantonese-style double-egg-yolk moon cake is equal in calorie content to a braised chicken drumstick boxed meal, HPA Deputy Director-General You Li-hui (游麗惠) said, adding that the two egg yolks contain 360mg of cholesterol, which exceeds the recommended daily limit of 300mg for the average adult.

You said the average white-collar worker weighing 60kg needs about 1,800 calories a day.

You said the agency was working with bakeries to provide healthier moon cakes that are low in calories, sugar and oil, adding that the agency was aiming for moon cakes containing only 400 calories per 100g, or one entire moon cake containing only 250 calories, with no trans fat.

You also suggested that when picking out moon cakes one should start with low-calorie, smaller moon cakes, try to avoid moon cakes with high-cholesterol salted egg yolks and look for moon cakes that are high in fiber.

Natural foodstuffs with high-fiber and mineral contents, such as persimmons, pineapples, nuts and jujube paste can be used to replace high sugar-content and high-cholesterol fillings, such as the traditional egg yolks, red bean paste or white gourd paste.

You also suggested that people divide the moon cakes into smaller servings and serve them with unsweetened tea.
